Fandom: Wolf’s Rain
Age/Appearance: As a human, Tsume looks to be about eighteen or nineteen, judging by the fact Kiba and he, the oldest of the wolves, are referred to as “boys” and “young men” in the series multiple times. This corresponds to about a two and a half year old juvenile wolf.
As a human, he has silver hair and a prominent X-shaped scar on his chest. His clothes are made up of tight-fitting leather. His wolf form has dark gray fur and the X scar still remains on his chest.

Canon Point: The end of the series.
Personality: The first impression Tsume gives is that of a cold loner, someone who just wants the world to leave him be, which is the way he stays throughout the first part of his canon until he joins with the rest of the pack. He’s gruff, snarky, and quick to dismiss someone who tries to engage him in any sort of conversation or relationship. A little arrogant in his abilities, he considers himself to be above humans, ignoring them altogether, unlike the rest of his pack, who are willing to at least interact with them. He’ll do whatever it takes to make sure that no one ever tries to see beyond this outer emotionally distant surface, to the point of getting physical, though not violent, with his companions.
Underneath, Tsume has a much bigger heart than he’ll ever let anyone know. The reason he shuts everyone out is because his emotions run very deep and he’s afraid that by letting them show, afraid he’s going to get hurt again. His first pack was killed and he is cast out by his alpha for his cowardice in running away, so he attempts to never feel that way again by keeping everyone at arm’s length. He never feels good enough.
Those who can get through his outer layers find that they have a loyal friend on their side that will be at their side until the very end, literally when he gives his life to defend his friend and Alpha, Kiba. He’s also got a soft spot for those who are more vulnerable than him, shown time and again when he defends the young wolf Toboe.
Tsume is first and foremost a realist. He is a practical being who thinks things through with logic and instinct. There is very little time in his mind for silly daydreams or idealistic spiritual thoughts, not when there is a very cold and harsh reality right in front of his eyes. He’s usually not the one to be coming up with creative ideas, but he can follow instructions when they are given to him. He is an introvert by every definition of the word. His thoughts and actions are all constantly turning inwards and he has been shown not to be able to tolerate more than a few people at a time. His nature is as a close to a true wolf as it as possible to show in human form.
His mood is very level, usually staying aloof and withdrawn no matter what the situation. The only way to really get his temper riled up is to compare him to a dog, or worse yet, a human. The only time he gets visibly emotional is when faced with the hopeless situations at the end of the series of watching his friends and companions die one by one. Tsume begins all interactions with a mask of indifference, but the truth is that new situations make him close up because of his fear. He’s afraid of what a new and therefore unknown person or place might bring. As long as he knows about something, he can know how to react. Otherwise, he hides behind anger, sarcasm, and suspicion until he knows them better.
Despite his closed off nature, Tsume prefers to meet things head on and challenge them, acting rather than waiting for someone else to tell him what to do. It’s not to the point where he will blindly run into danger simply because it’s there, but definitely he’s a go-getter. Being a wolf, Tsume’s first instinct is to attack anything that pushes him too far. Ever since the disaster with his first pack, that has become even more imperative to him. He rarely turns and runs, even when the rest of his pack has done so or when that would be the smarter idea.
Tsume has a dry sense of humor that borders on the macabre, once lightly suggesting in which order the wolves should eat each other if they are starving. He’s very snarky and he often snipes at the other wolves in regards to their shortcomings and personal faults, though these barbs are only meant to get under the skin, not viciously hurt them in any way.
He has no physical fears, but mentally, that’s another whole story. He fears his own inadequacies, considering himself to be less than what he is, and is afraid that he’s going to end up dragging everyone down with him when they come to light. He sees himself as a coward and is also terrified that part may someday resurface. Lastly, though he’ll never consciously admit it, he fears for his pack’s safety, afraid his actions may someday be the death of one of them.
Reason for playing: I find Tsume hard to fit in to most games. His loner nature coupled with the ending of the anime leaves him in a depressive state that isn’t very conducive to most jamjar games. Looking over this game, I found that the idea of having a different life an intriguing one. He’s going to react in a much different way having two sets of memories than merely his canon ones.
I think he’ll be an interesting addition, being a character who has now experienced a life that is most thoroughly not human in nature and even died in his other life. He’s going to now be faced with the tough choice of how to grow as an individual and which life to accept as his reality.
III. ARK HISTORY
Name: Same name.
Age/Appearance: His appearance is the same, with only difference being that his human form is now default.
History: Tsume grew up in one of the Chasm Cities, in a small village known as Volk. It wasn’t an easy life, but his family worked hard, and they got by. They lived in a close-knit community where everyone worked for the good of the group. Shapeshifting magic, while rare on a whole throughout the Ark, was prominent in the community thanks to close blood ties. His father, Nioi, the leader of the village, was particularly adept. Tsume had a natural talent for tapping into the magic and was taught by his father how to shift his form into that of a wolf. He would have been content to remain this way forever, but it wasn’t to last. He never knew if it was the Capitol, the rebels, or just another village that had fallen on hard times. In a single night of fury and blood, Tsume lost his home forever.
Instead of trying to fight as the tinder-dry homes burned and people were butchered, the boy, barely eleven years old, turned and ran. He hid among the rocks on the outskirts of the village until the raiders were finally done. Few had survived the conflict, the already-small village whittled down to less than ten individuals. Tsume’s mother Kagu was among the casualties. In a fit of anger and grief over his wife’s death, Nioi irrationally blamed Tsume for his mother’s death, claiming his cowardice had cost her life. He attacked his son with a knife, causing deep cuts on his chest before casting him out, telling him never to return.
Tsume, hurting in both body and soul, made the agonizing journey across the Chasm Cities, wandering from place to place like a ghost. He blamed himself for what had happened, going through the scenario over and over again in his head. If only he had done something different, his life wouldn’t have been shattered. Five years of wanderings later, none of which he clearly remembered, he found himself in Twin City.
The tough, gritty nature of the city suited his temperament better than anything thus far. In his eyes, the citizens of the city were fools, content to barely scrape by, letting their lives pass them by. None of them would have lasted a day in his world, where survival was never a guarantee. He decided to stay for the simple reason he was too bone-tired to keep moving on.
Tsume started off stealing just small and simple things, enough to trade to hackers who could get him credits to keep himself fed and clothed. To combat the boredom and isolation he felt, he began moving onto larger items. Before he knew it, Tsume had developed the reputation of being a thief, and a good one at that. He didn’t care about the money that came with the valuable goods. It was the temporary rush he craved, something to make his emotions stop gnawing away at his insides, if only for a few moments.
He used the rumors of his reputation, the mysterious thief who had seemingly turned up out of nowhere to his advantage, forming together a gang of thieves with him as the leader. He ruled them with an iron fist, using intimidation to keep them in line. He’d finally carved out a niche for himself, using the gang to commit daring raids, stealing everything from food to luxuries. Eventually, his antics began to catch notice of the local law enforcement. Unaware of his shapeshifting, he has used his other form to evade the authorities thus far, but recently; a reward for his capture has been issued. Rather than toning down his activities, it made him all the more reckless.
He thought his thieving career would give him a sense of satisfaction. But Tsume was wrong. All it did was help to master the tough persona he had created for himself, completely burying all his emotions within him. It was then that the highjacking occurred. Tsume woke up from the experience no longer sure if he was a man or a wolf. But he was certain of one thing: he needed to change for the better.
As he tries to figure out just how to do that, he continues to steal and jack in whenever he can, hoping against hope that he might run into his pack somewhere in cyberspace.
Residence/Job: Tsume lives in an partially-collapsed apartment building in Twin City, the ramshackle nature of the place keeping out all but the hardiest of intruders. He steals whatever he needs to in order to survive, not caring about credits as long as he has enough to survive through to the next day.
Skills/Powers: Tsume has a rare shapeshifting ability that allows him to change his form into that of a wolf. Had he been trained more by his father, he could do many different kinds of animals, but since he left home with only partial knowledge on how to use his magic, it remains in a stunted, rudimentary form. Subconsciously, he can channel his magic into his physical human form, allowing him to have above-average strength, stamina, and agility than a normal person.
Resources: Aside from a few credits stored under a false I.D. made for him a few years ago, Tsume has only one item of value. A hovercycle that he lifted off a transport and was too fascinated with to sell, he periodically works on it to improve the speeds and functions. He uses it to navigate Twin City. The only other possession he owns is a large knife carried on him for protection.
IV. SAMPLE
Arrival:
Tsume woke up in the exact same place he’d passed out the night before, inside of the apartment building he was currently staying in. The place was half-collapsed, a handy deterrent if any other member of the slums was looking for a place to stay. Head throbbing, he put the electrodes on his temple. Stupid faulty system. He should have known better than to jack in Twin City. At least in the Capitol, he wasn’t gonna fry his brains out on just a quick trip to check on local shipping reports.
He tried to stand up and collapsed back to the floor, unaware that his whole body was shaking as memories flashed through his mind, trying to catch up as two and a half years worth of remembrances were suddenly shoved into his brain. When he opened his eyes back up, Tsume found it surprising his entire world hadn’t shifted on its axis.
“Get ahold of yourself,” he whispered. “None of it was real.” One hand, jerky in movement, came up and swiped at his golden eyes, removing any wayward tears that threatened to spill. The other tore the electrodes off with much more violence than was necessary.
It was stupid to think of his other life now. It was just all make-believe and fairy tales. Never mind that his own skin now felt alien to him, how he longed to feel earth under four bare paws instead of two feet; how he could still feel the snow settling on his body as he had slowly died. He was going to forget it all. Forget everything he had experienced, the crappy life that had resembled his own so much, the part where he’d found a pack to belong to again, and especially their journey to find Paradise.
No. How could he forget? He’d finally belonged, just like he’d always wanted. Maybe the ending had been shitty and horrible, but that wasn’t important. The journey was what had counted and for the first time in his life, Tsume had felt like he was doing something worthwhile. What was it that Kiba had told him? “If life has no purpose, you’re dead already.”
“Godammit, it wasn’t real!” Tsume screamed at the surrounding walls, impassive to the man’s violent denials. But was it? Where did fantasy end and reality begin? Had that other world been just a dream? Or was this the real dream, whatever came after he died? Was he even a man or a wolf? He forced himself to stop thinking of questions. If he didn’t, he was going to go crazy.
One thing to him was clear. He couldn’t go back to the way he had been, just an empty shell stealing because it was all he knew how to do. He needed to change. Standing up tall for what felt like the first time in his life, he walked out of the apartment. It was time to start living life, his life, the way it was meant to be.
“Tsume! Where have ya been?” The yell jerked him back into the real world. One of the members of his gang, with a mud-streaked face and wearing clothes two sizes too big, had already sought him out. He gave a long sigh. There was still had work to do. There were raids to plan out and items to sell. He was acknowledged by the kid with the usual mix of respect and fear.
“Round everyone up. We move tonight,” he said gruffly, feeling an acute sense of déjà vu. For what felt like the thousandth time, he whispered the words silently to himself. It wasn’t real. He wasn’t a wolf. He pretended that thought didn’t break his heart.
